Boxing Ballerinas [back]

Oil on Panel  |  10" x 10"  |  2010

The delicate femininity of the ballerinas is in contrast with the expectation of a boxing match. The dancer's skin is faded as if caught in the moment of a camera flash. This was influenced by Andy Warhol's Polaroid photos in which subjects were made young and glamorous-looking with the annihilation of blemishes or wrinkles by the stark light of the camera flash. It also functions to isolate the dancers by obscuring their surroundings and informs us that we are a part of their isolation as well as their celebrity.
