Girl in the Gold-lined Hood [back]

Oil on Panel | 6" x 6" | 2010

In this modern annunciation scene, the Madonna is set in an urban environment suggested only by a riot gate. The inside of the woman's hood is simulated gold leaf which is a reference to spirit, as is the light emanating from beneath the riot gate. The messenger is featureless and could just as well create fear as deliver a message from God. The lace under the woman's hoodie hints at a cloaked softer side of her and it is ambiguous whether she is pulling her zipper up or down.
